June 12th, 2019- State of Nigeria’s democracy

Nigeria's democracy

                                                                           Nigeria’s democracy

The song of a country who claims to be a democratic state but has leaders who know little or nothing about democracy.

Nigeria’s democracy has always been celebrated on the 29th of May to commemorate Nigeria’s freest and fairest elections of June 12th, 1993 until it was shifted on June 6th, 2018, by President Muhammadu Buhari to June 12th as the new Democracy Day.

While in secondary school, my Civic Education teacher defined democracy as the government of the people, for the people and by the people.

I have always tried to relate this to Nigeria’s current democratic situation and it has been to no avail.

Actually, thinking about it only brings one thing to my mind, the democracy song by Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun (Da Grin), I haven’t heard a more vivid description of Nigeria’s democracy before.

Corruption ti hit nation
Gbogbo wa la n live in desperation

Tori generation yii, a need salvation
Through a strong constitution

Nigeria's democracy

                                                 Nigeria’s democracy

Maybe one day we will have the kind of democracy defined by Abraham Lincoln, but for now I wish you all a happy democracy day!
